Speaker Meeting – 24th September 2020, 06.30pm
Following a brief career summary Roger will focus on his latest adventure. Working three days a week in a prison. HMP Send is a women’s prison situated in Ripley just outside Woking, Surrey.
It is in open countryside surrounded by fields and farms with no bus routes and little in the way of nearby housing.
In normal times there are around 280 inmates. The establishment is unique in the range of courses and opportunities offered including TC a therapeutic community Pipes and many others.
There is a complete range of inmates age wise and offense-wise.
Send is normally a final stop on the way to release. Roger is part of the Farms and Gardens team and is responsible for recycling within the prison.
Farms and gardens cover an area of 4.5 acres and has poly tunnels, greenhouses, tractors, mowers, blowers and all manner of gardening tools and implements.
There will hopefully be time for questions afterwards.
About the Speaker
Roger graduated in Civil Engineering from Loughborough University.
He spent a number of years working in the UK and internationally in both consulting and contracting – motorways, water supply, and an airport project.
A change of course led to sales and marketing with a French manufacturer of quarry plant. Having decided not to return to civil engineering he decided to concentrate on commerce; he successfully undertook a full time MBA at Cranfield.
The Middle East beckoned and he spent 5 years in Saudi Arabia managing a steel fabrication company – Saudi Metin.
Returning to the UK he was appointed CEO of Duke & Ockendon (DANDO).
On leaving Dando he set-up from zero an innovative business – “selling air” on garage forecourts. Prime customers included all the oil majors.
Airvending became #1 in the UK.
